Card System

The study of karate requires consistent class attendance and practice to advance. The Solebury Club Shotokan Karate program tracks the attendance of students. All students or parents must fill out and maintain a registration card. This card is the student's responsibility. Each student must pull their card before each class and line up with it (for kids this teaches responsibility). Sensei records the date and the card serves as a record log of classes attended and belt testing dates.

Testing

Testing is held every six weeks for the youth and adult program. A student must attend a required sixteen classes (two classes a week), not including special classes, in order for a child to be eligible to test. A Notice of Intent to Promote sheet must be signed and dated by Parents and Teachers prior to the test date. In addition to the minimum number of classes, there are varying time requirements between each belt (which are listed below). In order for an adult to be eligible to test they must have thirty-two class recorded on their registration card. The cost for each test is as follows:

Test

Cost
Little Tigers $20
Candidate Yellow - Purple $35
Candidate Brown - Candidate Black $70
Black Varies based on Dan level to Dan level.

The testing fee is necessary to cover the ranking certification with the American Japanese Karate Association (AJKA) and to offset some of the costs for the dojo equipment and continuing education training of the instructors.
