Master Funakoshi looked at Karate as a spiritual art as well as a physical one. According to Master Funakoshi, “The ultimate aim in the art of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants.” In his book, Karate-do Kyohan, he discusses both the positive and negative aspects of Karate, telling us that Karate-do can be misused if it is misunderstood.
Those who want to learn Karate must understand the art, from the spiritual, mental, and physical aspects. Then the practitioner must learn how to use techniques and skills properly.
We should stop to consider Master Funakoshi’s original philosophy of Karate-do as he explains it in 20 lessons. The following is quoted form his book, Karate-do Kyohan.
