Solebury Club Karate (SCK) is affiliated with the American Japanese Karate Association (AJKA-I) www.americanjka.com. The SCK is recognized as the AJKA-I of PA and the official East Coast Training Headquarters for the AJKA- I. Instructors with the SCK have personally trained for many years under AJKA-I president, Leslie Safar (9th Dan), and have completed the rigorous AJKA-I two-year instructor-training program. Solebury Club sensei’s have received and maintain their instructor diplomas with the AJKA-I. All students with SCK receive international belt rank certifications under the AJKA-I. Yearly, AJKA-I conducts a training camp in California and Europe. Instructors and students from around the world participate at these camps. Sensei and some adult students from SCK usually attend one or both of these camps. In addition, seminars with the AJKA-I president and chairman are held at the Solebury Club several times a year.

Rob DeAngelis - 6th Dan

Sensei DeAngelis' passion is to share his love of karate with his students through personalized, motivating and insightful instruction. His focus is on conveying the importance of details and how they come together to produce powerful techniques and confident students. Sensei DeAngelis draws upon 22 years of instruction, training and competition in the United States and Europe under some of the highest-ranking Sensei in the world. To complete his 6th Dan requirements, Sensei DeAngelis wrote a thesis on Kokyu (Breathing or diaphragmatic breathing) and its major role in karate, in addition to demonstrating advanced kata, sparring skills and techniques.

Robert Tomasulo - 4th Dan
SCK Chairman & Technical Director

Sensei Tomasulo's dedication to Shotokan Karate is readily apparent in his accomplished techniques and his research of the basic fundamentals of Shotokan Karate. He has studied under some of the highest-ranking Sensei in the world. Sensei Tomasulo enjoys the challenges of teaching karate and the benefits of learning from his instruction of students.

Ed Rumick - 2nd Dan
SCK Chairman and Karate Program Director

Sensei Rumick has an energetic and exciting personality that both adult and young students can relate to. He motivates the youth program students to help them realize what they can achieve through practice and the support of a teacher. Sensei Rumick introduces the students to the Black Belt goal. He progressively develops their skills and confidence on their individual path towards that goal. Sensei Rumick has been teaching children for numerous years and has assisted in developing a SCK youth program that stands above other programs in combining quality instruction with high standards and an atmosphere of fun.

Adam Older - 5th Dan
SCK Competition Coach

Sensei Older has been training in the martial arts since 1985.  In 2003 he was promoted to the rank of 4th Dan by Shihan Patrick Byrnes www.bushi.com.   Sensei Older began teaching in 1994 at the age of fourteen and has since become the coach of the Bushi Karate competition team that has produced fourteen US National Team members since 1984. 
National competitor: US National Team member every year since 1998 winning 2 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals at the US Nationals.
International competition: WKF World Championships (Germany), WSKA World Championships (Czech Republic; Chicago, IL), WKF World University Championships (France; Japan), Pan American Championships (Chile; Dom. Republic). 

International medals include:
1996 Junior World Cup (gold) 2000 Pan American Championships (silver)
2001 US Open (gold) 2001 Maccabiah Games (gold, 2 bronze)
2005 WSKA World Championships (gold) 2005 and 2006 US Open (bronze).

Sensei DeAngelis has landed herself an important role model at The Solebury Club, especially among the younger female students. Sensei DeAngelis’s spirit and strong technique inspires and motivates the youth as well as adults, helping them realize what they can achieve through practice and strong spirit.

Greg Griffis - 2nd Dan
Assistant Instructor / Youth Program

Sensei Griffis started his training under Sensei R. DeAngelis at the age of six. Now at seventeen he motivates and inspires the younger students and is a key component to the youth program. Younger students view Sensei Griffis as the perfect example of a Black Belt. His students learn to understand thru hard work and dedication that a Black Belt can be obtained.

Leslie Safar, AJKA-I co-founder, has practiced Shotokan karate since 1958. He is well known on both sides of the Atlantic for his mastery as an instructor, his intense focus on the core technical principles of Shotokan Karate, and the development of instructor training programs dedicated to building the total instructor. Sensei Safar tours the United States on a regular basis, but spends the majority of his time teaching, directing, and developing AJKA-I karate in Hungary, and throughout Europe.

Edmond Otis has practiced Shotokan karate since 1967, and is internationally known as a competitor, instructor, coach, and judge. Sensei Otis is acclaimed for his innovative and dynamic teaching style, and is considered by many to be one of the premier karate instructors of his generation. He has trained numerous individuals and teams to national and international championships, and travels extensively for the AJKA-I, conducting seminars that focus on all aspects of karate practice.

Randall Hassell - 8th DAN
President

Randall Hassell, AJKA-I co-founder and President, is a world-renowned author and martial arts scholar who began training in 1960. He has written over two dozen books and 100 articles on the history, training and philosophy of traditional karate, and brings to our association a world of experience and wisdom. Hassell is Chief Instructor of the American Shotokan Karate Alliance (ASKA) and President of Damashi Publications, a book publishing and video production company in St. Lewis. John Hanratty - 7th DAN

John Hanratty has been training and teaching Shotokan Karate for over 38 years. Originally from the KUGB and the Red Triangle Dojo in England, he has devoted his energies to developing Shotokan in Canada and throughout North America. Sensei Hanratty is renown for his motivational skills, communication and teaching methods, plus an in-depth knowledge of Karate history, application and technique. Nick Palise, AJKA-I Senior National Advisor, has practiced JKA style Shotokan karate since 1965, and is founder and president of the Michigan Karate Association. His experience and deep knowledge of the technical, financial and organizational aspects of traditional karate practice allows him to serve a unique role as mentor and advisor to AJKA instructors, clubs and senior black-belts. Tony Desardi, with over 30 years of training, has devoted a lifetime to Karate. His extensive experience as a successful international competitor, former national champion, and coach, in addition to decades of teaching and leadership experience have made him a highly respected member of the international Karate community. Avi Azoulay - 6th DAN

Avi Azoulay, AJKA-I National Technical Committee, has practiced Shotokan karate since 1972. A respected instructor in Israel, he championed the Israel Open Karate Championships 2 consecutive years in a row. Azoulay moved to the United States in 1985 and began teaching and competing. In 1987 he established the American JKA of New York, where he teaches today, and in 1989 won 2 silver medals at World Maccabiah. Kevin Warner - 6th DAN

Kevin Warner has practiced traditional karate for over 25 years. An international competitor, he has won numerous national sparring and form championships. In 1997, he captured an individual bronze medal at World Shotokan Karate Championships, and in 2002, at the KWF World Championships. Robert Myles, M.D. - 5th DAN

Robert Myles, AJKA-I National Technical Committee, has over 25 years of traditional martial-arts experience. In addition to being known for his excellent technique and explosive kicking abilities, he is also a world renowned orthopedic spine surgeon. Sensei Myles combines his thorough understanding of classic shotokan principles with his in depth knowledge of body dynamics and mechanics to create a unique martial arts resource for the AJKA. David Gomez - 4th DAN
Media & Communications Advisor
David Gomez, AJKA-I media and communications advisor, has studied Shotokan Karate since 1978, and is chief instructor of the Georgia Karate Academy. Well known for his quality of teaching, he is also an accomplished graphic artist, author, multimedia producer, and desktop publisher who primarily uses his talents to create karate-related educational books and multimedia.
